Highlights of the Middle Rhine Valley
A World-Heritage Corridor
The Upper Middle Rhine Valley stretches for roughly 65 kilometres between Bingen/Rüdesheim and Koblenz and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2002. Steep vineyard terraces, more than forty hilltop castles and picture-book towns line the river, creating one of Europe’s most compelling cultural landscapes.
Iconic Viewpoints
Glide above the vines in the RĂĽdesheim cable car to the Niederwald Monument for a sweeping panorama over the Rheingau. For goose-bump drama, stand atop the 132-metre Loreley rock and watch the Rhine carve through its narrowest gorge. Equally unforgettable is the Deutsches Eck in Koblenz, where the Rhine meets the Moselle and a cable car links the riverbank with mighty Ehrenbreitstein Fortress.
Castles, Palaces & Museums
History feels alive in Marksburg, the only hill castle on the Rhine never destroyed; in the vast ruins of 13th-century Rheinfels Castle high above St. Goar; and in neo-Gothic Stolzenfels Palace, rebuilt for Prussian Crown Prince Frederick William in the 19th century. Want to spend the night in a fortress? Burg Stahleck in Bacharach hosts a modern youth hostel with postcard views over the river.
Vineyards & Outdoor Adventures
Dry-stone vineyard terraces have shaped Middle Rhine sights for centuries and still produce acclaimed Riesling today. Hikers tackle sections of the 320-kilometre Rheinsteig trail for ever-changing outlooks, while cyclists and casual walkers share riverside paths past medieval towers and half-timbered villages. A chair-lift from Boppard lifts you to the Vierseenblick plateau, where an S-bend makes the Rhine look like four separate lakes. Between May and September, the “Rhine in Flames” firework cruises bathe the cliffs and castles in spectacular light shows – a once-in-a-lifetime evening on the water.
Discover the Middle Rhine sights for yourself – and return home with memories as timeless as its castles.
