Stiftskirche St. Goar: Learn more about it
The Stiftskirche St. Goar, nestled in the heart of the city of Sankt Goar on the Rhine, carries a rich history dating back to the 6th century. Founded by Saint Goar, a hermit from Aquitaine, a vibrant settlement emerged around his burial site. Over the centuries, this place developed into a significant pilgrimage destination. The current Stiftskirche, the third church at this location, once housed the high grave of Saint Goar.
Particularly noteworthy is the major reconstruction by Count Philipp of Katzenelnbogen in 1444, who erected the nave. A turning point in the church's history was the introduction of the Reformation in 1528, which significantly influenced the character of the house of worship. The church also has a connection to Emperor Charles V, who prayed to Saint Goar in 1540 during his journey, despite being denied a mass in the church.
The Stiftskirche St. Goar presents itself as an architectural masterpiece. The construction consists of a west tower, an emporium hall, a choir square with choir flanks, and an apse. Particularly remarkable is the contrast between the Romanesque choir and the late Gothic nave. The use of rubble stone and sandstone gives the church its characteristic appearance.
Inside, the church fascinates with its crypt, which originally served as Goar's burial site. Despite the Reformation and the associated losses of church inventory, the current furnishings testify to the building's rich history.
This church is not just a place of religious significance but also a testament to the turbulent history of the Middle Rhine. It offers a deep insight into the cultural and architectural development of the region.
